Swimming with whale sharks is an experience that belongs on every traveller’s bucket list. It is one of the most popular activities in the Philippines, attracting visitors from across the country and internationally. These gentle giants are the largest fish in the world, and seeing them up close while snorkelling in Oslob is truly incredible.
We stayed in Cebu City and booked a tour that took us south to Oslob. The drive was a few hours, but it was easy, comfortable, and totally worth it for the experience.
Many visitors also combine the trip with other top things to do in Cebu, such as exploring Moalboal for its beaches, snorkelling, and diving, or visiting nearby waterfalls, to make the most of their visit.
Booking
We booked our Oslob whale shark experience here. The process was straightforward, and the tour gave clear instructions about pick-up times and safety guidelines. We chose this one because we also wanted to visit Moalboal, which ended up being our favourite part of the trip.
There are packages that include other activities too. If you’re looking for more adventure, adding canyoneering to the whale shark experience comes highly recommended. This option on Klook offers great value. We preferred booking online and going for a package, as it’s an easy way to see more of Cebu in a day without having to worry about transport or planning.

We were picked up from our hotel in Cebu City and spent a few hours travelling south to Oslob. Once we arrived, we collected our tickets and were dropped off at the breakfast area to wait for our turn. Around the ticket area, there are many souvenir stores, so if you are interested, you can pick up some cute whale shark magnets, keychains, and more!
When it was finally our turn, we changed into our swimwear and got ready for the experience. It’s important to note wearing sunscreen or makeup is not allowed in order to protect the whale sharks’ delicate skin.
Next, we boarded a small boat and were given snorkel goggles. Seeing the whale sharks up close was surreal, they are incredibly gentle and friendly! Guides make sure everyone keeps a safe distance, at least 5 metres so the animals aren’t disturbed. We spent roughly 30 minutes swimming alongside these gentle giants.

After the swim, we quickly rinsed off the saltwater and grabbed our towels. Then we headed to Tumalog Falls, where the car dropped us off below, and scooters were waiting to take us up, as it’s quite steep. It’s a very short ride to the waterfall, don’t worry. The waterfall was so beautiful and magical; it reminded us of the Avatar film, though the water was freezing! We also spotted a few fish swimming around.

We returned to the same area for lunch. Honestly, the food wasn’t the highlight, but it was convenient and gave us a chance to relax after the adventure and take a break before continuing to the second half in Moalboal.
Tips for a Great Experience

- Do not touch the whale sharks, keep your distance and follow the guides’ instructions.
- Bring your own snacks.
- Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro for underwater shots.
We had an amazing time swimming with the whale sharks. Arriving early made it quick and easy, and being in the water with these huge, gentle creatures was truly unforgettable.
